Qualitative Research Training
Our qualitative training (offered live Jan-Feb of even years) is designed for investigators and research staff who want to develop hands-on skills in collecting and analyzing qualitative data.
2025 Materials
Introduces building blocks of a qualitative study (objective, methodology, theory, research questions, and methods) as well as logistics of study design and human subjects’ protection.
Introduces interview skills including developing rapport, asking effective questions (open-ended, non-leading, single-barreled), letting the participant lead, funneling, and probing.
Conducting Focus Group Discussions
Introduces skills for designing focus groups, moderating discussions, asking effective questions, note-taking, and dealing with challenges.
Introduces basic principles of qualitative analysis including inductive and deductive coding techniques, and considerations for data management, codebook construction, and group coding
Synthesizing and disseminating qualitative findings
Introduces techniques in synthetizing coded data into main findings and conclusions as well as strategies for writing and applying non-traditional methods of disseminating findings.
In this training session, participants are introduced to the fundamentals of qualitative data analysis, from preparing transcripts to applying coding techniques. The video walks through the practical steps involved in organizing and analyzing qualitative data using systematic coding approaches.
Qualitative Research Skills 2.0 Mini-Series: Qualitative Software Data Analysis
In this session, participants continue developing their qualitative data analysis skills through hands-on practice and collaborative techniques.

Session 2.1: Philosophy of Qualitative Research. How do we know what we know? Viewers will be able to understand the major schools of thought within the philosophy of research (objectivism, constructivism, pragmatism) and how they apply to conducting rigorous qualitative research.
Technology and qualitative research. Viewers will (1) learn the basics of Dedoose coding software, (2) gain ideas for integrating technology into virtual focus group activities, and (3) be able to discuss emerging considerations for qualitative research given the recent explosion of AI language tools.
